Mental Health Ambassador
“Mental Health is state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to her or his community.” -World Health Organisation
The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation has now appointed a voluntary Mental Health Ambassador to their YCF Running Club. The role of a Mental Health Ambassador is to provide support to those living with mental health conditions and to promote the running club as a way of improving mental health in the local community to those who may be experiencing the effects of poor mental health. By being able to offer running club as a means to improve health, the YCF are actively working towards making Yorkshire a healthier county.
England Athletics aim to one day, have a mental health ambassador in every running club and group in England so that those experiencing mental health problems can access the benefits of running in an environment that can support them.
“When we started the running club at the Foundation, our aim was to offer a welcoming, safe, active environment for people to join. I feel people can achieve from the group what they want to achieve as the approach we take is to improve health holistically. We have had people who were training for run events, those looking for social opportunities and members who are looking to improve their running.” Beth Cook, Project Officer at The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation
Physical activity is known to be good for us. However, those with mental health conditions may face obstacles such as low self-esteem and negative feelings about themselves which prevents them from getting started in the first place. The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation are aiming to remove other barriers such as knowing where to go, and finding someone to run with out of the equation, making it easier for everyone to get involved. Once involved, the role of the Mental Health Ambassador will be to engage with them, provide them with the support to keep active and to provide sociable interaction within the group.
‘Run Together’ is an England Athletics initiative that aims to provide fun, friendly, supportive and inclusive running opportunities for everyone in England. In association with Run Together, the YCF Running Club is open to all adults (18+) in Yorkshire and is led by fully qualified Run Leaders.
Being a member of the group also has social perks based on weekly attendance such as the possibility of tickets to see YCCC play at home and social outings after running sessions.
In accordance with England Athletics policies, the YCF’s aims over the next few months are to reach out to mental health organisations, medical professionals and other institutions in the area to make them aware of the provisions offered by the Foundation. The Foundation hope to further their Health & Well-being work and reach more people in Yorkshire.
