Meet Our Tutors!
Cricket in the Classroom is the Yorkshire Cricket Foundations flagship scheme and runs every Wednesday and Thursday during term time for key stage two primary school children across the county. It gives children the chance to get out the classroom that they are used to and have a unique and educational learning experience within the grounds of Headingley.
The action packed day runs from 10am – 2.30pm and includes a range of cricket themed activities in the form of classroom based sessions, practical sessions and a behind the scenes tour.
The project has been very successful, running for 6 years, with over 2,000 children attending in the last academic year. Below are some of the people who we believe make it so great:
Peter Keighley- Cricket in the Classroom Tutor
Peter delivers the curriculum-based sessions of Cricket in the Classroom. He gives children an insight into Yorkshire CCC with workbooks, interactive quizzes and more.
Peter has always been an avid cricket fan and is also a qualified cricket coach. He currently coaches at a number of schools and other venues throughout North and West Yorkshire.
Prior to his cricketing roles he worked in corporate banking for many years, most recently as a Director of Corporate Banking, working with large family owned companies throughout Yorkshire.
“I run the classroom based part of the day which includes the completion by the children of a cricket based quiz book. There is usually a gasp of excitement when I tell the children that the best completed book will get two free tickets to a Yorkshire match. The children then watch a five minute film about Yorkshire winning the county championship and answer questions regarding the film using remote controls to transmit their answer to the computer. This is a very popular part of the day with a big cheer from the children each time they find out that they have got a correct answer. They always seem to have a great time.” - Peter Keighley
Matt Green- Cricket in the Classroom Coach
Matt takes the Cricket in the Classroom Coaching sessions, which is the practical part of the day where children learn the fundamental techniques of cricket, learning new and developing on their existing cricket skills. For many students, this is the first time they have been introduced to cricket and the sessions are a real hit with the kids.
“I deliver the practical session of Cricket in the Classroom which the school children really love. They are always keen to participate and egger to learn new skills. There are many children that have never been introduced to cricket before, let alone played a game so it’s great to see sparks of interest and see the children leaving inspired to start playing.”
Mel Reuben- Cricket in the Classroom Tour Guide
Mel is the Yorkshire Cricket Foundations Tour guide for stadium tours and Cricket in the Classroom. He takes the children on an exclusive behind the scenes tour and they are given access to places such as the Players Changing Rooms, the Media Centre, Players Practicing Areas, the Dickie Bird Balcony and much more, ending the day with a team quiz!
Mel has followed cricket since a young age and has figured in every role at his local cricket club for over 56 years, as well as taking the Yorkshire Cricket Foundations tours for over three years.
I take the children on the behind the scenes tour of the stadium, they always show a keen interest and particularly like the players changing room and dining area which is otherwise off limits.
The smiles on their faces after an enjoyable Cricket in the Classroom day makes it all worth while!
