Wicketz Yorkshire is Launched!

Wicketz Yorkshire will provide free cricket sessions for children and teenagers in three hubs across Yorkshire, starting this December.

Wicketz is a community cricket programme. Initially launched in 2012, the programme aims to establish sustainable cricket environments in areas of high deprivation, providing young people from those areas with the chance to engage in regular sport for free.

The Lords Taverners are funding this exciting project and have teamed up with the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation to deliver on this brand new programme. Led by local coaches, the sessions are designed to provide a fun first experience of the game to youngsters who have never played before.

As well as providing opportunities to play cricket, the programme will go beyond the boundary of just taking part. By bringing children and young people together, through the medium of cricket, Wicketz has the potential to help transform individuals and communities.

Wicketz Yorkshire will take place in 3 different hubs across the county: Grange Interlink community Centre in Bradford, Karmand Community Centre in Bradford and Harehills Catch in Leeds.

The Launch

The Karmand Community Centre (address below) will be offering up the first slice of the action for the Wicketz Yorkshire Launch on Saturday 2nd December. The first session for ages 8-11 will run at 12-2pm and the second session for ages 12-16 will run from 2-4pm. There will then be a buffet, with a selection of hot and cold foods.

Following on from the Launch at Karmand Community Centre, all three hubs will run weekly sessions on week days, with times and dates to be confirmed.

This type of cricket is all about the ease of picking up and playing. For somebody wanting to give it a go for the first time, you will learn the fundamental elements of the sport, in a fun and enjoyable way.

I’m really excited to get started with the first ever Wicketz hubs in Bradford. I’m confident these will become something children, young people and the wider community can take different forms of ownership of from the get go. – Ben Fraser, Bradford and Leeds Wicketz Development Officer
