Why we #RunandTalk

Last night saw the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation host its second #RunandTalk event of the year.

#RunAndTalk is a campaign created by England Athletics, in conjunction with Mind, that aims to do exactly what it says on the tin: Run and Talk. The idea is that running brings lots of mental health benefits and running in an organised group allows you to become part of something social and chat to other members.

11 people took part in the run, with each member receiving a run and talk trainer tag, to overtly show their support for mental health in their local community. The warm up consisted of an interactive game which gave people an insight on the meaning of mental health wellbeing, aiming to reduce the negative connotations around it. Then following a route just short of 5K, the RoseRunners ended with a social get together.

The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation Running Club members, more aptly known as the YCF Rose Runners, meet every Monday at 5.30pm outside the Yorkshire Cricket Centre. Sessions vary each week and cover a distance of approximately 5K.

The Run and Talk also took place during Men’s Health Week, so there was a particular emphasis on Health and Wellbeing in Men and how running can boost this.

“Men’s mental health is such a current topic and should be one that we talk about more. 75% of suicides are committed by men and this is often linked to poor mental health or lifestyle factors such as alcohol and drug misuse as a way of coping with mental health or living circumstances.” – Beth Cook, Health and Wellbeing Manager, Yorkshire Cricket Foundation

Running is a great way to improve your mental health and wellbeing. It helps decreases symptoms of depression, improves learning ability, sharpens memory, slows cognitive decline, alleviates anxiety, improves sleep and increases creativity. What’s more, running as part of a group gives a social element to the activity and is more motivating, with 90% of people saying they feel happier running in a group.

Since its inception back in 2016, there have been 24 men of a variety of ages attend the YCF Running Club and it’s our ambition to increase the amount of male #RoseRunners.
