Calling all Leeds students - join us for #RunandRevise!

The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation are hosting a #RunandRevise event on Wednesday 15th May 2019 at 5pm.

The event, which is in line with RunTogether and Mind’s campaign to promote taking an active break from studying to support mental and physical health, is particularly important due to the added pressure at this time of year.

We are partnering with all three Leeds-based universities; the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett and Leeds Trinity, who are inviting their students and staff to take part to benefit their studies, work and overall health!

80% of young people say that exam pressures significantly impact on their mental health. In addition, the number of people in this age bracket struggling is ever increasing, with England Athletics reporting that there has been a 70% increase in teenagers diagnosed with anxiety and depression over the past 25 years.

Research has shown taking breaks and doing exercise are excellent coping strategies for reducing stress in students, so combining these methods can only provide positive outcomes for you and your exams!

In an interview with the Independent. former elite athlete and current teacher, Fiona Coghlan, said:

They often feel like they will study more if they have no other distractions, which just isn’t the case. You can only study so much and making time to exercise and clear your head is essential. Young people need to have outlets in their lives and being active in a sport is one of the best things they can do. Being active in sport could do wonders for a student’s stress and mental health.

Running is a great source of endorphins and is well renowned for producing the infamous runner’s high in participants, leading to improved wellbeing and productivity post-run.

As well as this, running is recognised for improving memory, cognition, mood, attention, anxiety and sleep, in addition to numerous physical benefits.

The event is running in line with Mental Health Awareness Week to encourage people to think and speak about mental health and take steps to break the surrounding stigma.
