2014 Top Gun Winner Joins the Pros

In September, 2014, in front of thousands of spectators, four fast bowlers from North, South, East and West Yorkshire stepped out onto the Headingley turf during the interval of the England v India One Day International hoping to win the title of the fastest club bowler in their county.

Amongst those 4 hopefuls was eventual winner, Mark Fisher whose delivery of 77mph in a tightly fought contest proved to be the fastest of the inaugural Yorkshire Top Gun County Final.

As money can’t buy prizes go, performing on the outfield, in front of a sell-out crowd at Headingley during an England international is certainly a memory the finalists won’t easily forget. However, for the winner there was one more chance of a lifetime and that was the opportunity to train with the Yorkshire squad and receive one-to-one coaching with Yorkshire 1st XI coach and fast bowling legend, Jason Gillespie.

Mark, who plays club cricket for Sherriff Hutton Bridge in the York & District Senior Cricket League, and whose brother Matthew is in the professional squad arrived at the East Stand nets area on a cold February morning to take a full part in the morning’s activities.

The session started with a warm-up taken by Blaine Clancy before the net session was under way. Mark bowled in tandem with Steven Patterson, under the watchful eye of coaches Jason Gillespie, Ian Dews and Richard Damms.

It was a fantastic experience, great have a bowl against professional players. I just tried to hit the right areas as much as possible…the main difference was having to bowl a tighter line to the batsmen to make them play. It was great to get some advice from Dizzy, he’s a class bowler and I’ll try and put into practice what he said
