Yorkshire Elite Leaders Academy Launches

Yorkshire’s T20 fixture against Derbyshire on the 28th of June hosted the launch of the Yorkshire Elite Leaders Academy, a scheme developed and run by The Yorkshire Cricket Board and the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation.

The programme, has been developed since 2008 and over the first two years saw 350 young people attend “A Day in the life of Headingley Stadium” days, where they got to experience firsthand what happens in a professional sporting venue.  This has now been developed into a sustainable scheme aimed at over 16’s, designed to encourage further volunteering within cricket, and also reward the work participants have already done.

The Academy has been able to launch due to sponsorship from G4S. Eric Alexander, Managing Director of G4S Events, said: – “At G4S we are very proud to sponsor The Yorkshire Elite Leaders Academy. This great scheme closely chimes with the G4S values of teamwork and enhancing personal performance by rewarding and developing young people in Yorkshire who are already volunteering their free time. It’s a way of giving something back to those who already give so much, I very much look forward to our continued association with this fantastic initiative.”

It’s fantastic to see this group of young people rewarded for their efforts, helping out at their local cricket clubs.

Those on the Academy have been actively volunteering within cricket at their local club and school and have completes over 100 hours of volunteering. All of the Academy members had to go through an application process and which also included written references form their club committees which highlighted the hard work these volunteers have done. As a result of this will be financially supported to go on to gain qualifications within the sporting world. These qualifications range from Coaching to Groundsmanship depending on the interests of the Elite Leader. The scheme can also offer valuable work placements and networking opportunities at The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and also out in the community.

Yorkshire Elite Leaders Academy is recognised by the ECB V Cricket scheme which is known by employers nationwide and can prove to be a valuable platform for developing a career in sport.

Jason Gillespie Yorkshire CCC 1st Team Coach, attended the launch and said “It’s fantastic to see this group of young people rewarded for their efforts, helping out at their local cricket clubs. Cricket in Yorkshire is thriving and it’s due to the many volunteers involved.”
