Matchday Yorkies: Ashley's experience

With the 2019 cricket season just over a month away, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation are on the lookout for volunteers to join their Major Matchday support team, the ‘Yorkies’.

The scheme gives people of all ages the opportunity to become a vital part of the matchday operation at Emerald Headingley Stadium, Scarborough and York cricket club.

We spoke to 2018 volunteer Ashley, a local student who explained how the scheme gave him the opportunity to meet new people, boost his CV and work at an international test match:

I really enjoyed being a Matchday Yorkie as it gave me the chance to step out of my comfort zone and interact with a range of people I wouldn’t normally interact with. I was mainly tasked with distributing freebies around the ground and directing supporters when needed, as well as helping in the club shop at busy periods.

The scheme was introduced in 2015 and has grown ever since, with last year’s cohort contributing 648 hours of their time to the YCF and Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Volunteers have the opportunity to undertake a range of roles, including transport from local railway stations, sightscreen control, work in the Yorkshire Cricket Museum and social media promotion.

Last season, England played Pakistan at Emerald Headingley in the second match of a two-test series, and Ashley explained the role he was given as Joe Root’s men raced to victory:

On the third day of the test match, I was given the chance to control the sightscreen at the football stand end of the ground.

I was initially quite apprehensive given the need to stay switched on throughout the day, but after being shown the ropes by Peter I was put at ease.

Thankfully there were no major hiccups, although I was nudged to change the screen by Alistair Cook and the England slip department at one point!

He added:

If you’re unsure whether to apply for the scheme, go for it! All the YCF staff are friendly and provide constant support and training to help you get the best out of your time volunteering.

All volunteers are eligible for a free match ticket at the game they are working on, so you don’t have to miss out on the action!
