Three Wicketz hubs now up and running in Hull!

It has been just over five weeks since The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation launched their second Wicketz Project, this time in the City of Hull.

The cricket project, funded by national cricket charity The Lords Taverners, offers free weekly fun cricket sessions to the communities that are in areas of deprivation and without access to sporting opportunities. The programme targets young people aged 8-16 and has already made an impact on the youngsters who have attended.

The three hubs (Costello Stadium, The Waudby Centre & Sirius Academy North) have been well supported by local emergency services, schools and youth service providers. Humberside Fire and Rescue service have attended two hubs to speak to the youngsters on how they impact the community as well as a sneak peek around the fire trucks. Humberside Police have also been fantastic in supporting the new project by attending regularly, giving talks and showcasing their cricketing skills. Matt Wright (Hull Engagement Officer for Office of the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner) has also been down to ‘have a bowl’ and speak to the kids on the importance of community.

Special thanks must go to Hull City Council, Sirius Academy West & North and the University of Hull who have supported with their facilities and FareShare Hull and Humber who provide the light bites and refreshments for the children.

As the summer approaches, we already have plenty of activities in store. Local training providers Lessons 4 Life are attending the hubs over the Easter to introduce First Aid to the youngsters as well as plenty of other workshops coming to the hubs. On the project, Wicketz Development Officer Rick Robinson said:

Although the project is just getting off the ground, you can see it is creating a positive change on the children that attend. We have been very well supported and have an exciting summer ahead which I hope the kids enjoy and remember for a long time.

A female participant who has recently joined the Costello Hub said:

I was doing dance after school but I really enjoyed one of the taster sessions so I have decided to join the local Hub and its great fun!

As the programme grows we encourage any youngster in the area to pop down to the Hubs to try them out, for more information or any queries please do not hesitate to contact Rick Robinson on 07791242850 or email
