Faith in Cricket

Sunday 23rd June saw the Interfaith T10 League being held at Pontefract Lane, East Leeds CC hosted by the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, in partnership with Good Deeds. It was an enjoyable day of cricket, with people of different faiths and from different communities of Leeds coming together to play some entertaining and competitive cricket, all with fantastic spirit!

People were brought together, through their love of cricket, from the Islamic, Christian, Sikh, Hindu and no faith community.

The day saw three teams going head to head against one another and the team with the most wins out of the two games, would be crowned the champions. The first game was a close one with Yorkshire Lions narrowly escaping defeat against Peace CC. After a fascinating display of batting by the Yorkshire Lions, Peace CC got off to a terrible start losing both openers in the first over. However, after some consolidation and late hitting they looked to surpass the Lions target of 136. But some good death bowling ensured they were restricted to 120, and Lions came out as winners.

The second game saw Peace CC taking on Leeds Indians. Peace CC got of to an absolute flyer with the bat and put up a very challenging total of 140. Leeds Indians were never challenging the total, losing early wickets and the middle order not firing, they eventually ended their innings on 92.

The final game of the day saw Yorkshire Lions take on Leeds Indians. Leeds Indians went into bat first and were bowled out for a lowly 62 – a delightful display of bowling by the Lions! Yorkshire Lions, convincingly beat Leeds Indians with only one wicket down and many overs still in hand. They were ultimately declared champions for winning both of their games.

It was a great day of cricket overall! Members of all faith communities from the local areas and beyond turned out to watch the games. Alongside the cricket, all the teams and different faiths networked well with each other and lots of new friendships were formed, making the whole day a success! The evening was rounded off in style with some delicious food for everyone present.
