Beach Cricket 2019

Beach cricket this year was a roaring success, with 140 children taking part from Yorkshire-based clubs and schools and to top it off – the weather was fantastic!

The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation’s beach cricket tournament takes place on Scarborough’s South Bay beach each occasion Yorkshire play at North Marine Road during the season. Teams compete in a round robin tournament on 2 flix pitches. The aim of the beach cricket tournament is to engage children in a non-traditional style form of the game and to introduce casual cricket in a positive way to new audiences.

This year, we wanted to expand beach cricket, so we adapted the project offering by opening out the opportunity to play to a wider range of ages and we also encouraged more girls to take part.

Winners of each day got either a medal or a trophy and every child that took part not only got tickets to watch Yorkshire that day, but also their very own bat and ball to take home with them!

Day 1 – Sunday 30th June – Clubs

We hosted for clubs from the East area of Yorkshire. These clubs also felt beach cricket was the perfect opportunity to get families involved too, so clubs organised for parents, grandparents, siblings and friends of the clubs to attend, all for a nice day out in Scarborough!

Spirits were high – but not as high as the tide! During an intense finale to the day, Dad’s of the teams offered to line up along to boundary, marking it out for the umpire, which was of amusement to local spectators!

Day 2 – Monday 1st July – Schools U11’s

Day 2 saw another glorious day on the beach with the sun out – conditions couldn’t have been any better.

We hosted schools from Sheffield and Hull. Teams were extremely competitive but demonstrated strong sportsmanship throughout the competition and did their schools proud.
