Object of the month - November

Official annotated programme from USA Tour match, Southern California v Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California, 27 and 28 September 1964.

Cricket is not normally a sport associated with the USA! However, Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the 1963 County Champions of England, toured the west coast of America, during which they played an invitation match at Griffin Park, Los Angeles.

This is a very rare programme from that fixture and was donated from a gentleman in Kent.

Captained by Brian Close, the team boasted an unrivalled array of cricketing talent: Jimmy Binks (who later settled on the west coast), Geoffrey Boycott, John Hampshire, Richard Hutton, Ray Illingworth, Tony Nicholson, Doug Padgett, Mel Ryan, Phil Sharpe, Fred Truman and Don Wilson.

The cricket ground at Griffin Park had four pitches where the exclusive and illustrious Hollywood Cricket Club members, including Boris Karloff, Ronald Coleman and Leslie Howard played, and movie stars like David Niven, Laurence Olivier, Olivia De Haviland, Elsa Lanchester and Merle Oberon could be seen spending their Sundays watching the action in the afternoon sun…

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a record of the result.
