The YCF are delivering a new project based in Leeds, funded by the Sir Stanley Matthews Coaching Foundation, which aims to upskill 60-70 disadvantaged youngsters aged between 16-21, who have an interest in cricket and leadership, by providing them with a free Level one cricket coaching qualification. In addition to the qualification, it helps to equip youngsters with life skills, improve their confidence and aid in advancement into employment.
We began this by opening up the coaching offer, with the help of local authority, clubs and community links, to areas considered to be the most deprived across Leeds. So far, we have recruited 20 young people who have taken part in the ECB Level one course, with a 100% pass rate. In addition to this, we also provided a free first aid course for all newly qualified coaches.
The new coaches were given the chance to shadow an experienced Level two coach and were mentored through their 20 voluntary hours. Once coaches had completed this, they could then apply for a paid position as a casual support coach for Leeds City Council and the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation. The next progression of this project, is to provide coaches with the opportunity to complete their Level two Cricket Coaching qualification in March 2019.
