Happy 92nd Birthday Eric!
Ain’t no party like a Cricket party!
Next Wednesday as Walking Cricket Groups Barnley and Doncaster battle it out in a competition, we will also be celebrating the birthday of the oldest walking cricket participant, Eric, who turns 92 that day!
The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation have recently partnered with the University of the Third Age (U3A), who are a national charity, which brings together third agers to continue their interests, learning and activities in a friendly atmosphere.
The first Walking Cricket match will be hosted next Wednesday (10th July).
Walking Cricket – which includes both men and women cricketers playing in mixed teams – is being developed by Barnsley U3A member, Mac McKechnie, who at the beginning of the year decided to set up the first ever Walking Cricket group in cricket-loving Yorkshire. There are now 36 members of the Barnsley group.
Walking Cricket is just like the real thing except you aren’t allowed to run and the ball is softer. The growth of walking sport is enabling third agers to get back to playing the sport they love. Walking sport is exploding in popularity in U3A with other groups like Walking Football, Walking Netball and Walking Rugby springing up in U3As all over the country.
