League winners set to face-off in Yorkshire Indoor Cup

Four league winning teams across the region are set to compete in the first ever Yorkshire Indoor Cricket Softball Cup this weekend.

Leeds Gladiators, Bradford Swat, Sheffield Dynamites and Kirklees Super 6s will compete for the trophy on Sunday, 27 March in Bradford.

In total 26 teams across the four cities competed for up to eight weeks as part of the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation (YCF) indoor cricket competition.

Sohail Raz, Diverse Communities Manager for YCF, who helped run the Leeds league and organise the final, said: “The Indoor Softball Leagues have been brilliant this year and finals day is set to be a brilliant event.

“The finals day is about providing an opportunity for communities across Yorkshire to come together watch and play cricket and celebrate one another.”

The indoor leagues provide the opportunity to play more formalised cricket, but within the community local to participants.

After researching the areas and barriers to playing sport, the session dates and times were tailored around this and provided at low cost.

This year saw a collaboration with Kirklees and the expansion of the league to Sheffield and it will be the first time that winners from all the cities will meet.

The Yorkshire Indoor Cricket Softball Cup is part of the YCF’s Core Cities programme – run in conjunction with the English Cricket Board’s (ECB) action plan to engage South Asian communities – with the aim to increase participation in formal and informal games of Cricket as well as training and recruiting volunteers from local communities.

Sohail Raz, Diverse Communities Manager for YCF, said: “Here at the Foundation, we are committed to helping tackling health inequalities using the power of Cricket as a hook.

“Next year we will be looking to continue to expand the competition wider still and make it bigger and better!”
